🚨"Advancing Albania’s Energy Transition through Carbon Market Mechanisms: Policy Readiness and Strategic Opportunities"

:mag: As part of my ongoing PhD research on climate change and the energy transition toward a low-carbon economy, recently I am working on a study to explore if and how carbon pricing instruments like Emissions Trading Schemes (ETS) and Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCM) may and can be adapted and implemented in Albania’s evolving climate policy landscape.

:pushpin: Key Points for discussions and further research:
:white_check_mark: Albania’s strategic position in aligning with the EU Green Deal & Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
:white_check_mark: Untapped potential of renewables (hydro, solar, wind) & afforestation projects
:white_check_mark: Lessons from global markets: carbon leakage, allowance allocation, Monitoring Reporting and Verification systems and the digital ones to enhance transparency

:white_check_mark: A roadmap for institutional readiness, pilot projects & regional cooperation

:mega: Why it matters:
Although Albania has low GHG emissions, the country faces increasing pressure to integrate carbon pricing into its governance framework — and this study offers evidence-based recommendations to inform policy and investment decisions.

:link: The case can contribute directly to my doctoral research by examining how scientific frameworks and practical policies intersect to enable meaningful climate action at the national level.

:brain: Let’s Discuss!

  • Can smaller economies like Albania lead on carbon market innovation?
  • How can blockchain and digital MRV reduce barriers to market entry?
  • What role should academia play in shaping emerging carbon governance models?

 I’d love to hear your insights, critiques, or similar experiences from other transitioning economies.
