I am professor of MAINTAINING, RETROFITTING AND STRENGTHENING OF STRUCTURES at the University of Montenegro, Faculty of Civil Engineering.
I am teaching a group of 20 students, who I have divided in 4 groups composed of 5 students each.
I have assigned them to prepare an overview of seismic and energy upgrading technologies for buildings used in existing practice and to explore the possibilities of their usage as combined technologies. For this purpose, they should proceed with a survey prepared for a private civil engineering sector (in construction and designing) to get information related to the following aspects:
Seismic retrofitting technologies in use:
Increasing capacity by intervening on existing elements locally? Increasing the strength of the elements? Increasing the deformation capacity of the elements?
Increasing capacity with insertion of additional elements globally? The steel-braced frames or concrete walls inserted in the interior or, outside the building?
Reduction of demand? A global intervention to achieve a reduced seismic demand, either by introducing seismic isolation systems or adding damping?
Local measures in RC structures? Local measures in masonry structures? RC/mortar jacketing? FRP jacketing?
Global measures in RC structures? Global measures in masonry structures? Shear walls? Infills? Bracing systems? Seismic isolation? Energy dissipation systems?
Energy upgrading technologies of buildings in use:
Upgrading of the thermal shell? Thermal insulation materials? Traditional materials? More advanced materials for thermal insulation? Green roofs?
Replacement of the mechanical equipment?
Energy production on-site? Renewable Energy Source (RES) systems?
Are there any private entities who are interested in collaborating with our students to conduct a survey in their companies? We will be conducting 12 surveys in total, therefore we will need collaboration with 12 different private entities in civil engineering sector (in construction and designing).
